How Chatroulette works today
Chatroulette was launched in 2009 by Andrey Ternovskiy, then a 17-year-old student in Moscow, and named after Russian roulette because you never know who comes next. Within months it had a million visitors a day and its own parodies on South Park and The Daily Show. The core loop has not changed since: allow the camera and microphone, press Start, talk or type, press Next. How to start video chatting on Mnogochat

Nothing opens until you press the button, so you can read this guide first, and you can scroll back down to it at any time. When you press Start, the chat loads in the same window; there is no app, no download and no file to install on a phone or a computer.
The first thing you see after that is your own browser asking for the camera and the microphone. This is the browser's prompt, not the chat's, and it appears once; press Allow.
